How to Shut Up the Shut Down

written by Uncle Sam

Dear America,

What can one possibly add to the shutdown story that hasn’t already been said? That it’s an insane finger-pointing ping pong talking head clusterf$%&!? OK, thanks. We knew that. Actually, I have three points to make that I don’t think you will read elsewhere:

1) The Republicans have a point.

I have a point.

To listen to the left, you would think the right wingers doing the shutting are just pure evil merciless idiots akin to cancer cells unaware that if they kill the host they die too. Well, here’s news for the democrat-libs ( that’s an old Agnew term I kind of miss ): The right knows what it is doing, and it makes sense for them to do it this way. They want, as hard as this is for some of us to understand, to not have Obamacare. They want not to have Obamacare so bad they are willing to go all the way to not have it. They really think that adding all these layers of bureaucracy and requirements and redistribution of wealth will bloat up the government, not really fix anything, and cost us acres of money and quality of care. And, well, they have a point. So let’s not demonize them for demonizing us ( for demonizing them… ). They honestly believe the future of America is at stake. So let’s grand them that. It’s not such an affront. They’re fighting for what they want. It’s just like war, like it should be.

2) The whole debate is retarded.

Not really communicating

The way we are conducting the conversation is itself such a bigger problem than the content! The fact that we no longer have debate, that we can’t discuss, that’s a far bigger danger and cost and debility, than even Obamacare itself. I’m referring the screaming back and forthness of 100% of the media. At least in the 70’s there were a handful of reflective shows with hour long formats where subjects would be treated in some depth. We got none of those now.

3) The Republicans have a lot in common with the Taliban.

Hostages come in many forms.

And I’m not even saying that’s a bad thing. But if you push my argument in #1, that all’s fair in this kind of war, then you start realizing that the Taliban have a point too. They don’t want the world to become the modern world you and I know. And they have some really good reasons for this. The world kind of sucks and its going to destroy itself very soon, for starters. So if you believe that something has to be stopped at all costs, then all bets are off, whether you’re a right wing tea bagger bashing Obamacare, or an ultra-conservative Taliban bashing everything.

But really, the point I’m making is that the right, right here in the US, is perfectly happy and willing to let the country burn, because in their view, it’s burning anyway. So,
they’ve adopted the behavior of the Taliban. In a sense, they’re terrorists. They are just going to drag Obamacare down. They will never get a clean vote, but they will just keep sniping, shooting, attacking it. They’re motto: Don’t stop. Never stop. Attack! That’s their tactic. So let’s see it for what it is and stop acting all galled and such. Let’s just be like OK, so you guys are a fact of life, we get it, you’re just gonna abuse the levers of democracy and smash into it with everything you got.

OK, fine, if you guys are going to go Kamikaze, then we’re going wide. My suggestion: don’t take them head on with these issues. Rather, fix how democracy works and deal with the issues second. So, my agenda would be, first thing, fix the filibuster. Second, fix Citizens United. We the true patriots are calling a time out on “the fight.” Whatever it may be. We’re going to circle our wagons, realize WE are under siege, on the radical far side by the extremists that will resort to supporting or enjoying terrorism all the way to the outright terrorists. And it is with democracy that we will fight the far right, the Tea Party, that says one strong country, united, right or wrong, powering forward with no remorse or consciousnesses about the rest of the world. Amen.

Hilary Leans In

written by Uncle Sam

Hilary’s “retirement” has lasted just a few short months, and already she’s returning to the national stage with higher numbers and higher profile speeches. And why not? 3 years and a month from now we’ll be voting on a new president. She’s the presumed front runner, there’s really nobody who comes close to her gravitas, worldwide recognition, and machinery already in place.

All this can fade as quickly as you can say Benghazi, so if Hilary doesn’t lean in now, she may not be able to make hay while the sun shines. So what should she be telling us? And, mainly, how far should she distinguish herself from Barack Obama?

If I were Hilary, I would lean in now…hard. I’d take a page from the husband’s playbook and saturate. Time to start some heavy hanging with the American people, and developing the slightly new persona that’s going to be necessary to close the door on this election. Just as Reagan grew one final avatar for his last act, the kindly old gentleman dreaming of America, Hilary needs to whip up her pistol packing mama act and fully step into this role. The Annie Oakley Auntie Mame persona is already layed out for her.

Maybe when she’s ready to talk to the American people, she bills it as just a talk between grownups. She tells us: Tune in after nine and I’ll talk straight to the American people. Put your kids to bed.

She runs down the threats, the terrors, the dangers, the reality, she gives us a true rundown. She tells us the father figure that’s occupied this office hasn’t always told it to us straight. Daddy’s run off chile, now mama’s gone tell you how it is. You feel me? Hilary leans in.

“Look, I don’t want this going out as some big story, but I honestly believe that there are too many marginalized people, too many institutionalized people, and it’s a ticking time bomb. Yes, I see how warehousing so many human beings is profitable and why corporations would want to make this a business, but in terms of the social commons it’s not good. So please, meet me. What I am saying is: We can no longer afford to be in denial about who we are as a country. Nor can we afford to be puritanical or punishing or overly normative. This is what it is. As your President I am not going to hide reality from you. So here it is now: It’s scary. I’ve seen so much, and you’ve never seen anything like it.”

Open Letter To Anthony Weiner

written by Uncle Sam

Tony,

You used to be my hero. When your YouTube video: “The gentleman will sit” was making the rounds, I was a fan. Now when I see you, it’s the same as looking down at the floor at a strip club.

I understand the need to practice the art of deflection in politics. But to be this willfully and heedlessly ridiculous about whether the politican’s character matters? I mean, if I asked you if you were a stalker would it matter? If you were a sicko? etc. So this is getting close to that, but you keep saying it isn’t about you. How is serially going after phone sex after telling the world you were “cured” of it not about the person doing it?

It’s not about texting your penis. It’s a free country. If it’s mutual consent, penis away. It’s lying about it with so much anger you’ve burnt everybody out.

I think it’s hurting Hilary. The cold calculating power grab of you and your wife saying no biggie…I actually think it’s gonna rub off on her mentor.

You have made me a prude,

~ Uncle Sam

A Letter to Uncle Sam about Edward Snowden

written by Uncle Sam

Dear me,

Shocked, I’m shocked gambling is going on here!

OK, so honestly I already knew we were being spying on, really. The issue with the NSA scandal is what is a 29 year old high school dropout doing making well over 6 figures, given access to the most secret security clearance there is, able to have individual people investigated, able to do what he did, which is turn in all this information, which is probably great, but the real question is, how does a guy like that be given access like that so that he could be prosecuted like that? It’s like, you fucked up, you trusted me.

We have a 28 year old 1 yr Booz Allen contractor who gets a thumb drive and goes leaking the entire guts of the spying apparatus. It’s awesome! But how low a bar that people can get this kind of information and leak this?

We the people say:
“Hey, we hire you to look out for us!
What the fuck are you doing giving this loser top gun status?
And then as it turns out he’s not a loser. He does the right thing. How did you know? You’re brilliant.”

ZIP code musings

written by Uncle Sam

I came up with the the following thought while researching the ZIP code and how it began. We just realized we needed it, created a committee to do it, and, voila, then they did it.

So I was thinking about America and how we’ve lost what we never really had, and it got me sad, and I decided we didn’t have to accept defeat, and I decided the problem is we don’t meet.

Did you know the Greeks did not have representative democracy? They had direct democracy, but only among perhaps 10% of the population. But if you had a vote, you had to show up and participate.

And today, we have a head of government, and he hears from his advisers, secretaries of the various departments, and the 635 elected representatives. but with 350 million people, that’s 551181 people per representative. But what about coming together as a community, or other shared group, and deciding ourselves what we want?

Here’s how it could work.

1) We decide what we think. We decide what we care about and what’s most important to us.

2) We talk with our family and immediate friends to get a sense of how we fit in. We educate ourselves and refine our opinions.

3) We take the top stuff and dig a little deeper to see what’s being done to fix it.

4) We get a little involved in the very top stuff, one or two things we’re most passionate about. We get an insiders view of these “top topics.”

THEN

We get together with people in our geographical locale, and also around issues we care about. We think about how we could make small adjustments and changes so that we can reach broader consensus.

Among the local hood, we pick one representative for each ZIP code. so now we have an in between congress made up of 10,000 representatives, which is a little under 20 people for every existing legislator. So that’s a group that can talk, debate, agree, disagree, solve problems. 21 people meeting, all with a constituency, that then groups themselves together to their geographical representative, but, here’s the cool new part, also goes fishing for others OUTSIDE of their district that match theirs. So that’s a huge benefit. If composting or changing laws so reusing gray water, or so that composting was legal, or so that restaurants were allowed to give away food, or moms could leave their kids in the car, or whatever, maybe new laws would be passed, or new programs would be initiated, or new reforms would happen.
